What are living benefits and why do they matter?
Living benefits (sometimes called accelerated benefit riders) let you access a portion of your death benefit while you're still alive if you're diagnosed with a qualifying critical, chronic, or terminal illness — a heart attack, cancer diagnosis, or stroke.
Rather than depleting savings or going into debt during treatment, you draw on your own policy. This rider is often included at no extra cost on modern policies — but many people don't know they have it until they need it.
It's one of the most underappreciated features in life insurance today, and one reason we say life insurance isn't just about death — it's about protecting your life.
